News of SERCOS III
SERCOS III Brochure Available
SERCOS III is the third generation of the SERCOS interface, using Industrial Ethernet for its physical layer, but retaining its proven real-time and synchronization mechanisms, as well as its extensive motion control profile.
A 6-page brochure on SERCOS III is now available. It describes how SERCOS III merges the proven real-time mechanism of SERCOS interface with Industrial Ethernet. It includes a description of the real-time characteristics of SERCOS, describes available ring and line topologies, illustrates the structure of real-time and non-real-time
SERCOS data using Ethernet data frames, and discusses cycle times and the expected performance of various servo system configurations. The brochure can be
downloaded as a pdf, and can also be ordered as a hardcopy via our
literature request form.
SERCOS III Specification Issued
The specification for SERCOS III has been completed and delivered to the IEC
as a Publicly Available Specification (PAS), as required for inclusion in
the Real-time Ethernet standard, planned for 2007.
A "consortia version" of the specification is now available to
members of the SERCOS trade associations. The PAS version will become
available to non-members after the voting at IEC, expected by mid-2005.
SERCOS III GPCC and FPGA
As reported in the last news, Hilscher announced a GPCC (General Purpose Communications Controller) for SERCOS III at the recent
SPS/IPC/Drives show. You can find more information at www.hilscher.com.
The SERCOS organizations have developed an FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) for SERCOS III. A workshop is scheduled in March in Germany for members.

Pack Profile Has Been Updated
During the recent implementation of the SERCOS Interoperability Demo, several issues were noted where the Pack Profile needed clarification and/or improvements. Thus, the SERCOS Technical Working Group has updated the specification for the Pack Profile. A PDF
can now be
downloaded at no
charge.
SERCOS Conformizer
Products incorporating the SERCOS
II interface are currently tested for conformance with the SERCOS interface specification by
ISW, an institute at the University of Stuttgart. ISW uses
"Conformizer" test software, plus certain hardware tests, in their compliance testing. Once a product has been tested and certified, it is eligible to carry the SERCOS Conformance-Tested logo.
The Conformizer can be purchased for use in pre-testing SERCOS interface products, to ensure a 90%+ probability of such products passing the official test. There is an upgrade of the Conformizer available for testing for Pack Profile conformance. A one page flyer describing the Conformizer can be
downloaded from the SERCOS
N.A. website.
