This figure illustrates the types of communication needed by the automation industry, classified into 5 real time types. The figure shows the coverage provided by the different SERCOS generations. The SERCOS III standard covers all relevant real time areas.

The standard Ethernet communication is also included (dotted area in figure), if the IP channel is used without the cyclic real-time channel.
